Another gem in the crown of 8 Films To Die For

Ian Stone - a college kid in the UK, playing hockey and is having one of the worst days of his life.  Wouldn't you know, it's about to get worse.  After the hockey game, he proceeds to take his girlfriend to her parents house, only to get blue balls and then drive himself home.  He sees a lump on the road, after investigating a shadow demon springs up and holds him under a passing train.  It fades to black... and he awakens in an office in a shirt and tie.  We soon discover it's an alternate world, but nobody seems to notice the change (not even Ian).  At least right away - Ian starts to get notions of things in his past life, such as playing hockey in college.  After awhile, Ian is contacted by a stranger and informed that memories he seems to be having really DID happen, in another life.  He learns some hints about how he came to be in this predicament, but most importantly that it may continue.

Well, the cycle continues as Ian is pursued and killed by these creatures in each new life.  In each one though, the girlfriend from his first life is still there and always has contact with him of some degree.  More investigation reveals that he needs to keep this girl alive, as she is the key to his ability to hurt the creatures.  Even more than that, Ian WAS (or rather, IS) one of these creatures.

With the ability of the creatures to build new lives for people, this reminded me a bit of the plot behind Dark City.  Of course, dying and restarting the day always makes me think of Groundhog's Day too.  This was an amazing movie though - the end result was a little predictable and cliche (to me at least), but it didn't detract from the enjoyment.

--- SPOILER ---

So, as you may have figured out from the hint that he needed to keep that girl alive, Ian found love in her and that's what gives him the power to hurt the other creatures.  So he figures this out, kills the creatures, and can live his happy life with the girlfriend.  Like I said, a bit cliche, but still this is one you should see.
